Hyperhomocysteinaemia is recognised as an important modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The Framingham Heart Study found that high homocysteine levels were common – affecting 29% of people. There is also considerable evidence that homocysteine may initiate atherosclerotic damage, possibly through oxidation of LDL and direct vascular endothelial damage. Recent Research also indicates that homocysteine may be used as a tumour marker for several types of cancer, such as breast and colon cancer. Homocysteine levels can be tested in South African laboratories.
